The all-new Toyota Prius/Prius Prime has taken home another Car of the Year award after securing a similar accolade in Japan. The all-new Prius managed to bag the 2024 North American Car of the Year (COTY), getting the most votes from automotive journalists from the United States and Canada.

The North American COTY award was announced at a press conference co-hosted by the Detroit Auto Dealers Association (DADA) and Automotive Press Association (APA). The all-new Toyota Prius was able to outshine other finalists including the Honda Accord and the Hyundai Ioniq 6.

This marks the second time for the Prius nameplate to be named as the North American COTY. It was back in 2004 when the second-generation Toyota Prius first clinched the North American COTY.

Toyota Marketing Group Vice President Mike Tripp said that the company is thrilled that the jurors “agree that the all-new Prius and Prius Prime are exceptional vehicles.”

“After nearly 25 years, Prius continues to leave its mark on the world and offers customers a great option to reduce their carbon emissions,” Tripp added.

Toyota further shared that the Prius/Prius Prime earned the admiration of many of the journalist-jurors throughout the judging process. Among the reasons why the all-new Toyota Prius got the most votes is attributed to the vehicle’s appearance and fuel economy.

“The Toyota Prius and Prius Prime are not just handsomely styled hatchbacks, they represent the future of the automobile by blending traditional internal combustion with electric drivetrains,” “Of particular note is the plug-in version which offers more than 40 miles [64 kilometers] of pure electric range, allowing most owners to skip regular gas station visits,” said veteran journalist Matt DeLorenzo.

In Japan, the all-new Prius also got the most votes from the jurors–taking home the 2023-2024 Japan COTY award. The Prius bested 10 other cars included in the latest Japan COTY finalist, registering 360 votes which is far from its closest rival–the BMW X1 that posted 150 votes.
