Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) is expanding its ongoing safety recall to more models in its lineup. This time, the coverage has been expanded to include the Land Cruiser 300 full-size SUV and its LX 600 platform twin from Lexus.
The Toyota Land Cruiser 300 (pictured) and its Lexus LX 600 platform twin are being recalled
The recall covers 615 units of the Land Cruiser produced between July 7, 2021 and April 1, 2022. Affected LX 600 units, meanwhile, number 11 vehicles assembled between December 13, 2021 and March 12, 2022.
TMP’s recall in May 2022 initially covered hybrid versions of the RAV4 compact crossover and its luxury equivalent, the Lexus NX HEV. The advisory involved a problem with the brake actuator software that governs the vehicle’s stability control function. The feature may not return to the default setting on the next ignition cycle, after the driver has manually turned off previously.
When this happens, the vehicle will flash a warning light on the dashboard to prompt the driver to reactivate stability control. However, there is a chance that the driver will not notice this warning. While the vehicle will still be drivable, it will run without stability control engaged. This increases the risk of understeer, oversteer, and rollover, especially when the vehicle is driven at high speeds.
Initial subjects of the recall were the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (pictured) and Lexus NX Hybrid crossovers
The problem is not confined to our market, as Toyota Australia announced its own recall in April 2022. Apart from the Land Cruiser and RAV4 Hybrid, this announcement also covered the Kluger Hybrid SUV as well as the Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV). Toyota says that while it will take only an hour to reprogram the software, owners are advised to make their vehicle available for a longer time, depending on the dealer’s schedule.
As with the first recall, TMP is advising owners to check if their units are included in the recall advisory. Once confirmed, customers need only bring their affected Toyota or Lexus vehicle to authorized dealerships, where the brake actuator software will be reprogrammed at no cost.
